چکیده

Combining the existing approaches for optical intelligence and the speed and capacity of light is undoubtedly the only viable strategy for building future-proof, highspeed networks. Future optical networks are also expected to provide added value through service quality. However, the performance parameters included in current service level agreements (SLA) require the termination of a channel (wavelength) at an optical-electrical (O/E) conversion point to measure them. In all-optical networks, this is associated with higher cost. Therefore, the optimal monitoring solution for all-optical networks will be one that implements the minimum amount of O/E conversions required to measure or estimate the SLA parameters. This is very challenging due to the complex relations of electrical and optical parameters. Taking the bit error rate (BER) as the key performance parameter to quantify the reliability of a transmission system, this paper discusses the applicability of in-service BER estimation strategies used in current (opaque) optical networks to an all-optical framework. From this discussion, it is derived that link bit error checks are not cost-effective in an all-optical network. Then, we compare different alternatives for low-cost, real-time BER estimation with different levels of O/E conversions and apply the least intrusive of them to a use case consisting of an all-optical networking laboratory testbed. Through this example, we show that the combination non-intrusive monitoring of OSNR and packet statistics results in a viable estimation of the BER and at also provides additional, valuable information of packet metrics.

Minimum-Intrusion Approaches for In-Service BER Estimation in Transparent WDM Networks

The bit error rate (BER) is a key measure to quantify the reliability of a transmission system. In transparent networks, link bit error checks are not cost-effective. This paper proposes approaches for low-cost, real-time BER estimation with minimum opto-electronic conversions and applies them to a transparent optical networking testbed.

A Novel Protection Guaranteed, Quality of Transmission Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Algorithm for All-optical Networks

Transparent All Optical Networks carry huge traffic and any link failure can cause the loss of gigabits of data; hence protection and its guarantee becomes necessary at the time of failure. Many protection schemes were presented in the literature, but none of them speaks about protection guarantee. Also, in all optical networks, due to absence of  regeneration capabilities, the physical layer i...

Design of Arrayed Waveguide Grating based Optical Switch for High Speed Optical Networks

This paper demonstrates the design of an Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWG) based optical switch. In the design both physical and network layer analysis is performed. The physical layer power and noise analysis is done to obtain Bit Error Rate (BER). This has been found that at the higher bit rates, BER is not affected with number of buffer modules. Network layer analysis is done to obtain perfor...

High-speed All- Optical Time Division Multiplexed Node

In future high-speed self-routing photonic networks based on all-optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) it is highly desirable to carry out packet switching, clock recovery and demultplexing in the optical domain in order to avoid the bottleneck due to the optoelectronics conversion. In this paper we propose a self-routing OTDM node structure composed of an all-optical router and demultiplex...
